Program Notes:

Run for the Sun (2013) evokes an urban chase scene dashing towards the setting sun as it beams down long boulevards, interrupted by skyscrapers.  Two menacing melodies, initially heard in the horns and trombones, respectively, are the themes of a double variation.  They snake their way through the different orchestral choirs while undergoing a gradual harmonic expansion, as if running into bright light.  The percussion section plays industrial sounds on metals, woods and a drum set, infusing the orchestra with sounds reminiscent of electronic dance music.  The chase is briefly interrupted by a mysterious slow middle section evoking a feeling of temporary safety.  The brass thrusts the orchestra back into battle, and the work concludes with a heroic escape.
